Rug Cleaning

Each rug is washed one at a time.

Since 1978, Behnam has been cleaning, repairing and restoring fine handmade rugs. To date, we have cleaned over 100,000! Our goal is to safely, gently, handwash your rug so the rug you get back from us is not only clean and sanitary, but your rugs life has been rejuvenated rather that shortened.

Our approach to rug cleaning has never changed. Wash each rug one at a time, 100% by hand, using gently organic shampoo and cold running water. Although very time and labor intensive, this is the only way we wash our own rugs and the only way we will wash yours.

To begin, each rug is thoroughly inspected for wear and stains, vacuumed on both sides to remove all loose dirt, and then washed alternatively on both sides several times with our exclusive organic shampoo, formulated especially for wool fibers. During each wash cycle, your rug is scrubbed by hand with brushes specific to the rug type. After each wash cycle, the rug is rinsed with cold running water until the water runs clear. After the final wash, your rug is treated with conditioners designed to restore the wools PH level and to add luster when dry. We then extract any excess moisture before drying the rug outdoors in the sun. (Yes, the sun works wonders on a newly washed rug by releasing the natural oils in the wool fibers.) When fully dry, the rug is inspected again for any repairs that may be needed, its fringes cleaned, brushed out and trimmed, along with a final vacuum. If no repairs are necessary, you re called to arrange delivery, or pick-up. The whole process takes about a week to ten days.
