What is an Oriental rug?
Oriental rug is no different than Persian rug, Persian carpet, Oriental carpet, and Areal rug. These words are used interchangeably and are all handmade rugs. Oriental rug is made of natural wool fibers which are cooked in natural vegetable dyes that are made from various plants, leaves, berries, barks, seed, and roots. These natural wool fibers are sheared from sheep, washed and colored in a rainbow of natural colors. As these wool fibers are used to tie millions of knots to create a unique majestic design, the fibers have natural oils that keep the rug lubricated and breathing.
How often should Rugs be Cleaned?
If a rug is placed in an area that dust and pollution settles on the rugs surface, it causes the rug to suffocate. This chemical interaction with the natural wool fibers will cause the wool fibers to die. The best method in keeping a rug healthy is to wash it by hand rug washing with natural organic shampoos and enzymes and when rug was soiled by animals such as cats and dogs, at least once a year. If a rug is not in a high traffic area and not directly under pollution and depending on the rug quality, it can be washed every three to four years.
Types of Oriental Rugs
Oriental rugs, Persian rugs, Persian carpets, Oriental carpet, and area rugs are all handmade and depending on where they were made, the term might change. If a rug was handmade in Iran, it is a Persian-Authentic rug. Many Persian rugs are handmade in India, China, Russia, Turkey, Pakistan, Tibet, and Nepal; they are all called Oriental rugs, area rugs, and Persian carpets. These rugs come in wool-on-wool, silk-on-wool, silk-on-silk, and silk-on-cotton. They all need to be cleaned to keep the wool fibers from dying off.
