Do You Have a Persian Rug That Needs Reweaving?
Rug weaving is a process of creating a textile by interlacing threads. The initial rug weaving is done on a loom, a frame-like piece of equipment that holds two types of threads.
- Warp threads run vertically, and are attached to the loom frame and held in tension.
- Weft threads run horizontally and are interlaced with warp threads.
Rug reweaving is performed when a rug becomes damaged, or age causes the binding to unravel. Once binding unravels, the foundation of a handmade rug can unravel as well. We recommend you repair your rugs as soon as you notice damage, as continued use and wear increases the extent of the damage. When the unraveling progresses past the binding and into the body of the rug, reweaving becomes necessary.
When a weaver reweaves a rug, they must first identify the knot type used to construct the rug so that they can form knots in the same manner. This keeps the back of the rug cohesive. They will map out the pattern they need to recreate as well. The weaver will use both warp and weft to reconstruct the rug. This is a detail-oriented and time-intensive process, and as such, the cost for reweaving is higher than for binding repair or patching.
We recommend reweaving for very valuable rugs and patching for other rugs. Patching is not a perfect match like reweaving is, but it is rarely noticeable unless you know where to look.
