How to Choose a Rug

Handmade rugs can enhance the look of any room and complement any style. Perhaps you’ve already made your perfect room and you’re looking for a rug that will fit in with your interior design vision. Maybe you’re building your room around a single accent piece, like a large, handmade Persian rug. Whether you’re looking for a rug that will tie your whole room together or a rug that will make a statement, the following tips will help you.

There are four major factors you need to take into account when looking for a Persian or Oriental rug. These factors are color, size, design, and price.

Color is the most important element. The colors in your rug, whether you want to complement or contrast the rest of your furniture, make an impact. Traditionally, Persian rugs had a limited color range, however, these days, Persian and Oriental rugs come in a variety of stylish colors.

Size refers to both the size and the shape of your rug. Are you looking for a rectangular rug that covers the entire floor? Do you want a small, circular rug to be placed underneath a clear table? Did you want an area rug or a runner? Where do you plan on installing your new rug? Are you open to resizing and reshaping a rug? Take some time to consider what kind of rug your room will need.

Persian and Oriental rugs come in a variety of designs, and this can be quite overwhelming. For example, do you know the difference between a Hariz rug and a Tabriz rug? What about a Kashan rug? Do you know about the meanings of the symbols on Chinese rugs? Consider meeting with a rug expert or an interior designer, or perhaps looking through magazines for design inspiration, if you are feeling overwhelmed. On the other hand, you may not even have a design preference- you just want a rug that looks good.

Price is always an important factor. Whether or not you’re on a tight budget, when it comes to Persian and Oriental rugs, you generally do get what you pay for. Rugs of various quality levels will be priced accordingly. Beware of deals that are too good to be true, as a dirt-cheap silk rug may turn out to be synthetic silk instead! Although the price of Persian rugs may be daunting to first time buyers, it may help to consider a rug to be an investment. A well-made Persian rug will last for many years, and it is not uncommon to come across antique rugs that still look excellent. Persian rugs are also multipurpose. You can move your rug from the living room to the kitchen- even to your bathroom- and it will still look tasteful and refined. You can even use a rug as wall decor!
